Snakes at a glance
With good care, snakes typically live 15-25 years. Snakes are carnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 300 g to 20 kg. They reach maturity at about 3 years old.
Snake requirements vary enormously by species, from a 1m colubrid to a 5m constrictor. All need a thermal gradient, secure hides at both ends, and a lid that genuinely locks, since almost every escape traces back to a loose enclosure.
The health problems vets see most often in snakes include respiratory infection, retained shed and stuck eye caps, scale rot and mites.
Eggs usually take 55 to 90 days to hatch.
