Mice at a glance
With good care, mice typically live 1.5-3 years. Mice are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 20-45 g. They mature quickly, at around 2 months.
Mice need a secure tank or narrow-bar cage with deep bedding for burrowing and plenty of climbing height. Females live well in groups; males usually must be housed alone to avoid fighting.
The health problems vets see most often in mice include respiratory infection from dusty or cedar bedding, tumours, overgrown teeth and mites.
Gestation in mice runs about 19 to 21 days.
