Guinea pigs at a glance
A healthy guinea pig usually lives 5 to 7 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Guinea pigs are herbivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 700 g to 1.2 kg. They mature quickly, at around 5 months.
Guinea pigs are highly social and should never be kept alone. They need a large ground-level cage, unlimited grass hay, and a daily source of vitamin C.
The health problems vets see most often in guinea pigs include vitamin C deficiency (scurvy), dental malocclusion, respiratory infections and bladder stones.
Gestation in guinea pigs runs about 59 to 72 days.
