Tortoises at a glance
With good care, tortoises typically live 50-100 years. Tortoises are herbivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 1-50 kg. They reach maturity at about 12 years old.
Tortoises are genuinely lifelong pets that frequently outlive their owners. They need a large open tortoise table rather than a glass vivarium, a high-fiber weed-based diet, UVB, and species-correct humidity.
The health problems vets see most often in tortoises include pyramiding from protein-rich diets or low humidity, metabolic bone disease, bladder stones and respiratory infection.
Eggs usually take 60 to 120 days to hatch.
