There are 21 tools for turtles on XpertsPet, sorted into 12 topics such as age, behavior, breeding, cost, environment and health. The cards above take you straight to each group. Below is a short guide to what they cover and which ones are most useful at different points in your turtle's life.
Turtles at a glance
A healthy turtle usually lives 20 to 40 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Turtles are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 500 g to 3 kg. They reach maturity at about 6 years old.
Aquatic turtles need far more water than most owners expect, roughly 40 liters per 2.5cm of shell, with powerful filtration, a dry basking platform and UVB. They are a multi-decade commitment that commonly outgrows its first tank.
The health problems vets see most often in turtles include shell rot, metabolic bone disease from missing UVB, vitamin A deficiency and swollen eyes and respiratory infection.
Eggs usually take 60 to 90 days to hatch.
