Turkey care tools and calculators
There are 20 tools for turkeys on XpertsPet, sorted into 12 topics such as age, behavior, breeding, cost, health and housing. The cards above take you straight to each group. Below is a short guide to what they cover and which ones are most useful at different points in your turkey's life.
Turkeys at a glance
A healthy turkey usually lives 5 to 10 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Turkeys are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 4-15 kg. They mature quickly, at around 7 months.
Turkeys need more headroom and roosting space than chickens and are highly susceptible to blackhead disease, which is why keeping them with chickens is often discouraged. Heritage breeds live far longer than commercial broad-breasted lines.
The health problems vets see most often in turkeys include blackhead disease (histomoniasis), leg and joint problems in heavy breeds, respiratory infection and bumblefoot.
Eggs usually take 27 to 28 days to hatch.
