Ducks at a glance
Expect a lifespan of roughly 8 to 12 years for a well-kept duck. Ducks are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 1.5-5 kg. They mature quickly, at around 6 months.
Ducks need water deep enough to submerge their heads and ideally to swim, plus a predator-proof house at night. They do not roost, so bedding on the floor matters more than perches, and they make any area muddy.
The health problems vets see most often in ducks include angel wing from high-protein feed, bumblefoot, niacin deficiency in ducklings and botulism from stagnant water.
Eggs usually take 28 to 35 days to hatch.
