Geese at a glance
A healthy goose usually lives 15 to 25 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Geese are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 1-2.5 kg. They reach maturity at about 2 years old.
Geese are grazers that get most of their diet from grass, and need a large area plus water deep enough to dip their heads. They are loud, territorial and make effective guard animals, but a gander can be genuinely aggressive in breeding season.
The health problems vets see most often in geese include angel wing from high-protein feed, bumblefoot, egg binding and aspergillosis.
Eggs usually take 28 to 35 days to hatch.
