Snails at a glance
A healthy snail usually lives 3 to 10 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Snails are herbivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 1-200 g. They reach maturity at about 1 year old.
Land snails need deep moist coir substrate to burrow into and a steady source of calcium, usually cuttlebone, to build their shells. They are hermaphrodites and will breed prolifically if kept together.
The health problems vets see most often in snails include shell cracks and thinning from low calcium, dehydration, mites and impaction from unsuitable substrate.
