Crayfish at a glance
With good care, crayfish typically live 2-5 years. Crayfish are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. They mature quickly, at around 6 months.
Crayfish are territorial, escape-prone and will eat tankmates and plants. They need a tightly lidded tank, one hide per animal, and hard water with enough calcium to molt properly. Most do best alone.
The health problems vets see most often in crayfish include failed molt, claw and limb loss from fighting, copper poisoning and soft shell from low calcium.
