Betta fish at a glance
A healthy betta fish usually lives 3 to 5 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Betta fish are carnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. They mature quickly, at around 5 months.
Bettas need a heated, filtered, cycled tank of at least 19 liters with gentle flow. They breathe air from the surface, so the tank must never be sealed. Males cannot be housed together.
The health problems vets see most often in betta fish include fin rot from poor water quality, swim bladder disorder from overfeeding, ich and velvet.
