Corn snakes at a glance
A healthy corn snake usually lives 15 to 20 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Corn snakes are carnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 400-900 g. They reach maturity at about 2 years old.
Corn snakes are the standard beginner snake: docile, hardy and undemanding. An adult needs a 120cm enclosure with a warm end around 29C, a cool end near 22C, and a very secure lid since they are expert escape artists.
The health problems vets see most often in corn snakes include respiratory infection from low temperatures, retained shed, mites and scale rot from damp substrate.
Eggs usually take 55 to 65 days to hatch.
