Corals at a glance
A healthy coral usually lives 10 to 50 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Corals are filter feeders, which shapes what you feed and how much. They reach maturity at about 3 years old.
Corals are colonial animals, not plants, and depend on stable salinity, alkalinity, calcium and strong lighting. They are the least forgiving part of a reef tank, where stability matters more than any single value.
The health problems vets see most often in corals include bleaching from heat or light stress, tissue recession from unstable alkalinity, brown jelly infection and pests such as flatworms and aiptasia.
