Ants at a glance
Expect a lifespan of roughly 1 to 15 years for a well-kept ant. Ants are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 1-200 g. They mature quickly, at around 2 months.
An ant colony is kept as a superorganism rather than individual pets. A formicarium with a separate outworld, a humidity gradient and escape-proof barriers is essential, and the queen determines the colony lifespan.
The health problems vets see most often in ants include colony collapse after queen death, mold in the nest, dehydration and escape through small gaps.
