Pheasants at a glance
A healthy pheasant usually lives 3 to 8 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Pheasants are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 800 g to 1.5 kg. They mature quickly, at around 9 months.
Pheasants are flighty game birds that need a tall covered pen with plenty of cover to hide in, since stress causes feather pecking. Males are territorial and usually kept with several hens rather than other males.
The health problems vets see most often in pheasants include feather pecking in bare pens, gapeworm, coccidiosis and head injuries from flushing.
Eggs usually take 23 to 25 days to hatch.
