Ostriches at a glance
With good care, ostriches typically live 30-50 years. Ostriches are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 90-150 kg. They reach maturity at about 3 years old.
Ostriches are the largest living bird and genuinely dangerous, capable of a lethal forward kick. They need acres of paddock, very strong fencing and experienced handling, and are farm livestock rather than pets.
The health problems vets see most often in ostriches include leg fractures and rotated legs in chicks, impaction from swallowing objects, capture myopathy from stress and parasites.
Eggs usually take 42 to 46 days to hatch.
