Llamas at a glance
Expect a lifespan of roughly 15 to 25 years for a well-kept llama. Llamas are herbivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 130-200 kg. They reach maturity at about 2 years old.
Llamas are larger and more independent than alpacas, often kept as livestock guardians. They are herd animals needing companions, annual shearing in fiber breeds, and routine toenail and dental care.
The health problems vets see most often in llamas include heat stress, meningeal worm, toenail overgrowth and dental issues.
Gestation in llamas runs about 335 to 360 days.
