Goats at a glance
With good care, goats typically live 12-18 years. Goats are herbivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 30-700 kg. They reach maturity at about 1 year old.
Goats are browsers rather than grazers and need scrub, shrubs and height to climb. They are escape artists, so fencing must be taller and tighter than it looks necessary, and they must never be kept alone.
The health problems vets see most often in goats include barber pole worm and anaemia, bloat, coccidiosis in kids and hoof scald and rot.
Gestation in goats runs about 145 to 155 days.
