Horses at a glance
A healthy horse usually lives 25 to 30 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Horses are herbivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 30-700 kg. They reach maturity at about 4 years old.
Horses need roughly one to two acres of grazing per animal, shelter from wind and sun, companionship of other horses, and near-constant access to forage since their stomachs are built for trickle feeding.
The health problems vets see most often in horses include colic, laminitis, equine gastric ulcer syndrome and lameness and hoof abscesses.
Gestation in horses runs about 320 to 362 days.
