Hedgehogs at a glance
With good care, hedgehogs typically live 4-6 years. Hedgehogs are insectivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 300-600 g. They mature quickly, at around 6 months.
African pygmy hedgehogs need a solid-floor enclosure kept at a steady 24-27C. Below that they may attempt hibernation, which is dangerous for them. They are solitary and must be housed alone.
The health problems vets see most often in hedgehogs include wobbly hedgehog syndrome, attempted hibernation from cold, obesity and mites.
Gestation in hedgehogs runs about 34 to 37 days.
