Emus at a glance
With good care, emus typically live 10-20 years. Emus are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 30-55 kg. They reach maturity at about 2 years old.
Emus are large ratites requiring acres of secure paddock with fencing at least 1.8m high. They can deliver a dangerous forward kick, are legally restricted in many areas, and are a livestock-scale commitment.
The health problems vets see most often in emus include leg and hock injuries, impaction from swallowing foreign objects, parasites and heat and cold stress.
Eggs usually take 50 to 56 days to hatch.
