Alpacas at a glance
A healthy alpaca usually lives 15 to 20 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Alpacas are herbivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 55-85 kg. They reach maturity at about 2 years old.
Alpacas are herd animals that must be kept in groups of at least three. They need annual shearing, regular toenail trimming, and pasture plus hay. They are hardy but suffer badly in heat once fleeced.
The health problems vets see most often in alpacas include heat stress before shearing, barber pole worm, meningeal worm from deer contact and dental overgrowth.
Gestation in alpacas runs about 335 to 345 days.
