Salamander care tools and calculators
There are 16 tools for salamanders on XpertsPet, sorted into 12 topics such as age, behavior, breeding, cost, environment and health. The cards above take you straight to each group. Below is a short guide to what they cover and which ones are most useful at different points in your salamander's life.
Salamanders at a glance
A healthy salamander usually lives 10 to 20 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Salamanders are carnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 10-300 g. They reach maturity at about 2.5 years old.
Salamanders are secretive burrowers that spend most of their time hidden, so a deep moist substrate matters more than an elaborate display. They need cool temperatures and absorb chemicals readily through their skin.
The health problems vets see most often in salamanders include heat stress, chytrid fungus, impaction from loose substrate and dehydration.
