What is the Goose Lifespan Estimator?
The Goose Lifespan Estimator predicts expected lifespan range for geese kept as backyard or farm birds. Knowing where your goose sits on that curve helps you time vet checkups, adjust diet, and watch for age-related changes before they become serious.
A well-cared-for goose usually lives somewhere between 15 and 25 years. As an omnivore, what a goose needs from its diet changes across its life stages. Geese are grazers that get most of their diet from grass, and need a large area plus water deep enough to dip their heads. They are loud, territorial and make effective guard animals, but a gander can be genuinely aggressive in breeding season. Health problems that show up most often in geese include angel wing from high-protein feed, bumblefoot, egg binding, which is part of why tracking this over time pays off.

How does the Goose Lifespan Estimator work?
The calculation is based on species-specific aging curves rather than a flat multiplier, most animals age fastest in their first two years and then more gradually, and larger individuals within a species tend to age faster in their senior years than smaller ones. Use it to know roughly where you stand and what to ask about, not to rule anything in or out on its own.
Factors that matter
- Size or breed variant: since larger animals within the same species often age faster later in life
- Overall health and any chronic conditions, which can accelerate the effective aging rate
- Genetics and lineage: which set the baseline lifespan range
- Care quality: diet, exercise and preventive vet care all influence how a goose ages
How do you use the Goose Lifespan Estimator?
- Answer "How is the animal kept?"
- Pick your body condition (Underweight, Ideal weight, Overweight, ...)
- Pick your preventive veterinary care (Routine annual checks, Only when unwell, Rarely or never)
- Answer "Neutered or spayed?"
- Pick your breeding background (Mixed or unknown, Pedigree from health-tested lines, Pedigree, no health testing)
- Press Calculate, then read the result alongside the sources listed below
If two people care for your goose, agree on one method and stick to it. Half of all confusing results come from measuring differently each time.

Before you rely on this
Two geese with identical numbers on paper can still need different care. Breed or line, body condition, activity level and any existing health conditions all pull the real answer away from the average. If your goose has a diagnosed condition, is pregnant, or is very young or very old, treat the figure here as the loosest of guides and let your vet set the actual target.
