What is the Gecko Lifespan Estimator?
The Gecko Lifespan Estimator predicts expected lifespan range for geckos under captive care. Knowing where your gecko sits on that curve helps you time vet checkups, adjust diet, and watch for age-related changes before they become serious.
A well-cared-for gecko usually lives somewhere between 10 and 20 years. Diet-wise they are an insectivore, which shapes almost every feeding decision you make. Gecko care varies hugely by species: terrestrial species need floor space and belly heat, arboreal species need height and humidity. Confirm which species you have before setting temperatures, since requirements differ sharply. The usual suspects for this species are metabolic bone disease, retained shed around toes and eyes, impaction, so any noticeable change is worth following up.

How does the Gecko Lifespan Estimator work?
The calculation is based on species-specific aging curves rather than a flat multiplier, most animals age fastest in their first two years and then more gradually, and larger individuals within a species tend to age faster in their senior years than smaller ones. Use it to know roughly where you stand and what to ask about, not to rule anything in or out on its own.
What changes the answer
- Size or breed variant: since larger animals within the same species often age faster later in life
- Overall health and any chronic conditions, which can accelerate the effective aging rate
- Genetics and lineage: which set the baseline lifespan range
- Care quality: diet, exercise and preventive vet care all influence how a gecko ages
How do you use the Gecko Lifespan Estimator?
- Answer "How is the animal kept?"
- Pick your body condition (Underweight, Ideal weight, Overweight, ...)
- Pick your preventive veterinary care (Routine annual checks, Only when unwell, Rarely or never)
- Answer "Neutered or spayed?"
- Pick your breeding background (Mixed or unknown, Pedigree from health-tested lines, Pedigree, no health testing)
- Press Calculate, then read the result alongside the sources listed below
Use this alongside your own observation, not instead of it. You notice changes in your gecko that no calculator can pick up.

Before you rely on this
Two geckos with identical numbers on paper can still need different care. Breed or line, body condition, activity level and any existing health conditions all pull the real answer away from the average. If your gecko has a diagnosed condition, is pregnant, or is very young or very old, treat the figure here as the loosest of guides and let your vet set the actual target.
