What is the Gerbil Temperament Quiz?
The Gerbil Temperament Quiz identifies likely temperament traits of gerbils from behavior-based answers. Behavior and compatibility mismatches are a common reason introductions go poorly or pets end up stressed, a little upfront assessment goes a long way.
Gerbils generally live 3-4 years when they are well looked after. They are an omnivore, so their nutritional needs shift with age, size and activity. Gerbils are desert animals that burrow constantly, so they need at least 25cm of deep substrate in a tank rather than a shallow cage. They should be kept in same-sex pairs and produce very little odor. Keep an eye out for tail slip from being handled by the tail, scent gland tumours, epileptic-type seizures in some lines. These are the conditions gerbils are most commonly seen for.

How does the Gerbil Temperament Quiz work?
The result comes from a weighted set of common, well-documented behavioral factors rather than a single yes/no rule, since real compatibility and temperament are rarely black and white. It is a starting point, not a verdict. Somebody who has actually examined your gerbil will always know more than a formula does.
What changes the answer
- Household composition: other pets, children, and general activity level all matter
- The individual animal's history and socialization, which can outweigh general breed or species tendencies
- Living environment: including space and access to outdoors
- Your own experience level and lifestyle, which affects how well a given temperament fits
How do you use the Gerbil Temperament Quiz?
- Pick your reaction to unfamiliar people (Hides or retreats, Watches from a distance, Curious and approaches, ...)
- Pick your reaction to being handled (Struggles or bites, Tolerates briefly, Relaxed, ...)
- Pick your reaction to sudden noise (Panics, takes a long time to settle, Startles then settles, Barely reacts)
- Pick your reaction to a change in routine (Stops eating or becomes withdrawn, Unsettled for a day or two, Adapts quickly)
- Press Calculate, then read the result alongside the sources listed below
Bring the number to your next appointment. Vets can work with a figure and a date far more easily than with "he seems a bit off lately".

Before you rely on this
One number on one day is rarely the full picture. What matters more is the direction of travel: whether your gerbil is trending steadily, drifting, or changing suddenly. A sudden change is always worth a call to your vet, even when the individual figure still falls inside a normal range.
