What is the Dove Lifespan Estimator?
The Dove Lifespan Estimator predicts expected lifespan range for doves based on species and care quality. Knowing where your dove sits on that curve helps you time vet checkups, adjust diet, and watch for age-related changes before they become serious.
A well-cared-for dove usually lives somewhere between 12 and 20 years. They are a granivore, so their nutritional needs shift with age, size and activity. Doves are gentle, quiet ground-feeders that need a wide cage rather than a tall one, since they walk more than they climb. They are far calmer than parrots and suit households that cannot tolerate screaming. Keep an eye out for canker (trichomoniasis), egg binding in hens, respiratory infection. These are the conditions doves are most commonly seen for.

How does the Dove Lifespan Estimator work?
The calculation is based on species-specific aging curves rather than a flat multiplier, most animals age fastest in their first two years and then more gradually, and larger individuals within a species tend to age faster in their senior years than smaller ones. It is a starting point, not a verdict. Somebody who has actually examined your dove will always know more than a formula does.
What affects the result
- Size or breed variant: since larger animals within the same species often age faster later in life
- Overall health and any chronic conditions, which can accelerate the effective aging rate
- Genetics and lineage: which set the baseline lifespan range
- Care quality: diet, exercise and preventive vet care all influence how a dove ages
How do you use the Dove Lifespan Estimator?
- Answer "How is the animal kept?"
- Pick your body condition (Underweight, Ideal weight, Overweight, ...)
- Pick your preventive veterinary care (Routine annual checks, Only when unwell, Rarely or never)
- Answer "Neutered or spayed?"
- Pick your breeding background (Mixed or unknown, Pedigree from health-tested lines, Pedigree, no health testing)
- Press Calculate, then read the result alongside the sources listed below
If the result looks wrong, check your inputs before you worry. Entering weight in the wrong unit is easily the most common reason a figure looks off.

Before you rely on this
This calculation assumes a healthy adult dove with no complicating conditions. Pregnancy, recovery from illness, medication and significant age at either end of the scale all change what is appropriate. When in doubt, the safest move is to take the number to a vet and ask whether it fits your particular animal.
