Cockatiels at a glance
A healthy cockatiel usually lives 15 to 20 years, so the care decisions you make now play out over a long time. Cockatiels are granivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 80-120 g. They mature quickly, at around 9 months.
Cockatiels need a wide cage, daily out-of-cage time and a dust-free room, since they produce fine feather dust that irritates sensitive lungs. Night frights are common, so a dim night light helps.
The health problems vets see most often in cockatiels include night frights causing injury, chronic egg laying in hens, respiratory issues from feather dust and fatty liver disease.
Eggs usually take 18 to 21 days to hatch.
