Chipmunks at a glance
Expect a lifespan of roughly 5 to 8 years for a well-kept chipmunk. Chipmunks are omnivores, which shapes what you feed and how much. Most adults weigh around 70-150 g. They mature quickly, at around 11 months.
Chipmunks are semi-wild and need a tall aviary-style enclosure rather than a cage, with branches, deep substrate and nest boxes. They rarely become genuinely tame and may partially hibernate in winter.
The health problems vets see most often in chipmunks include stress from confinement, dental overgrowth, obesity from nut-heavy diets and injuries from escape attempts.
Gestation in chipmunks runs about 30 to 33 days.
