A Border Collie needs 90-120 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. A Basset Hound is happy with 30 minutes of gentle strolling. Getting this wrong causes real problems in both directions.

The Puppy Rule

For puppies: 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice daily. A 12-week-old puppy should have two 15-minute walks maximum. Over-exercising puppies before their growth plates close can cause permanent joint damage.

By Energy Level

  • High energy (Border Collie, Husky, Dalmatian): 90-120+ minutes per day
  • Medium energy (Labrador, Spaniel, Poodle): 60-90 minutes per day
  • Low energy (Bulldog, Basset Hound): 30-45 minutes per day
  • Toy breeds (Chihuahua, Pomeranian): 20-30 minutes per day
